URIAH HEEP have signed to Sanctuary and release their new studio album in the summer.

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT has announced the bonus tracks for two album reissues coming out February 13.
The Legacy Edition of the 1978 live album "Some Enchanted Evening" will double from seven to 14 tracks, with previously unreleased performances of "ME 262", "Harvester of Eyes", "Hot Rails To Hell", "Summer Of Love", "5 Guitars", STEPPENWOLF's "Born To
Be Wild", and an alternate version of the ANIMALS' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place". The album will also comewith a bonus 11-track DVD recorded in 1978 at the Capitol Center in Landover, Maryland, and new liner notes by PATTI SMITH GROUP guitarist Lenny Kaye.
The 1977 album "Spectres" comes with four bonus tracks from the recording sessions,
including the originals "Night Flyer", "M For Murder", "Please Hold", and a cover of the RONETTES' "Be My Baby". Kaye wrote liner notes for this reissue as well.

Former Procol Harum keyboard player Matthew Fisher has won the rights to 40 per cent of all future songwriting royalties on the band's seminal '67 hit 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'. Fisher had sued the band's vocalist vocalist Gary Brooker, claiming that he'd written the instantly recognisable organ part, and wanted a share of past royalties, plus 50 per cent of all future monies. Brooker intends to appeal.

GMT, featuring Robin Guy, John McCoy and Bernie Torme, are to start recording their second, as yet untitled album next month. This should be released in the spring.

Rose Tattoo are to issue their new album on February 16. Called 'Blood Brothers', this is on Armaggedon Music.

BUTCH WALKER is back with a rocking band called 1969, listen to songs from their upcoming album "Maya" here:

JEFF LYNNE is interviewed in the new issue of Q magazine.

PRESS RELEASES

The classic and highly respected American progressive rock band, Starcastle, will debut its first album of new material since 1978, Song Of Times, on ProgRock Records. The band had this to say:

"Starcastle is thrilled to join with Shawn Gordon and ProgRock Records in the release of our new work. We see this record as bridging our past and future, and are happy to be aligned with ProgRock, who represent so many fine and vital artists in this continually unfolding genre."

Song of Times includes contributions from all the original members: Gary Strater (bass and vocals), Matt Stewart (guitars and vocals), Steve Tassler (drums, vocals and keyboards), Herb Schildt (keyboards), Steve Hagler (guitar and vocals), and Terry Luttrell (vocals, original REO vocalist)- alongside a number of new players and singers, including current Starcastle vocalist Al Lewis and guitarist Bruce Botts. The record was mastered by Emily Lazar (Bowie, Lou Reed, Moby, etc). The fantastic artwork by Ed Unitsky equals and surpasses the best of progressive rock artwork and packaging.

Starcastle formed in the late 1960’s in Champaign Illinois. They released four records on CBS/Epic Records: Starcastle (1976), Fountains of Light (1976), Citadel (1977), and Real to Reel (1978). Together these records have sold more than a million copies. The middle two albums were produced by Queen/Cars/Darkness producer Roy Thomas Baker.

The band toured extensively into the 80’s, appearing with such artists as Aerosmith, Foreigner, Jethro Tull, Roxy Music, Ted Nugent, Rush, The Guess Who, Gentle Giant, Kansas, ELO, J. Geils, Styx, Peter Frampton, Hot Tuna, Blue Oyster Cult, Santana, Boston, Todd Rundgren, and of all bands - Sha Na Na!

Through a series of adventures and the passing in 2004 of bassist and driving light Gary Strater, this dedicated group of friends and associates have persevered to complete and release Song Of Times through Prog Rock records for shipping in late-January or from your local CD retailer from 13 March 2007, and are now looking forward to the new Starcastle’s headlining appearance April 27th, 2007 at the Rites of Spring Festival in Phoenixville, PA.

Frontiers Records is happy to introduce one of the most exciting new signings ever! PLACES OF POWER is a new monicker behind which two familiar faces are hiding the beginning of their newest collaboration.

Bruce Turgon (ex FOREIGNER, SHADOW KING, LOU GRAMM, ATOMIC PLAYBOYS) and Philip Bardowell (ex UNRULY CHILD, MAGDALEN) have started working together on a blistering set of new songs and have christened this new partnership as PLACES OF POWER: a name which, according to Turgon, "is very strong and meaningful to this project".
"Philip and I have a great working relationship and we have both a personal and shared inner vision" comments Turgon about this new venture, adding "we've spoken a lot about the kind of record we wanted to make and we found out we were exactly on the same page musically".
The fans can expect a magnificent melodic Hard Rock release, set to blend the best elements of Turgon's songwriting and musicianship together with the acclaimed powerful vocals from Bardowell, in order to create a real musical milestone akin to the best FOREIGNER and SHADOW KING albums. Something to get very excited about and that is planned to be released at the end of the summer 07.
Both Philip Bardowell and Bruce Turgon are Frontiers Records recording artists. Bardowell released his album "In The Cut" is September 2005 while Turgon debuted as a solo artist with "Outside Looking In" in the November of the same year. Both albums gathered rave reviews from the press, including:
"So many albums are released and reviewed, yet this one stands out as something a little different and something a little special. 2005 has been a year for the lesser known names and the surprise releases. Add Bruce Turgon to that list" - Melodicrock.com

"The music on Turgon's classy solo album reminds a lot of the albums he's been involved in the past so all fans of Foreigner will have a feast for sure. High quality AOR at your service!" - Melodic.net

"Bruce has crafted one of the best AOR/melodic hard rock albums of the year! Especially the fans of Foreigner will be pleased by this release!" - Rock Report

"Philip Bardowell released a mighty fine album filled with glorious AOR that will appeal to both fans of the old-school traditional sound of this genre and fans of more current releases" - Melodicrock.com

"I consider Philip Bardowell a true asset in these rather meagre times for our beloved AOR/melodic rock genre" - Rock Report

ROBERT PLANT & THE STRANGE SENSATION (DVD 2006) Universal

Recorded on his ‘Mighty Rearranger’ tour in 2005 at the Soundstage in Chicago, Robert Palnt has a hand picked band from all over the musical spectrum including drummer Clive Deamer and keyboards player John Baggott from the electronica band Portishead. The set list is a mix of tracks from the new album including the wonderful ‘Tin Pan Valley’ and ‘Shine It All Around’ with some reworked Led Zep classics, ‘Black Dog’ (sounding slightly subdued), a sublime ‘Gallows Pole’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’. Two bonus songs including a reverential cover of the Hendrix classic ‘Hey Joe’. The sound and picture quality are top draw, with no annoying camera angles sometimes found on live DVD’s.
Bonus wise you get the videos for ‘Morning Dew’ and ’29 Palms’, plus a Top of the Pops appearance for ‘Big Log’ (more like big hair looking at the band members!) and ’29 Palms’. All welcome additions to a very welcome and well presented live DVD.

WAR OF THE WORLDS - The Musical
Live On Stage (DVD)
Universal

When Jeff Wayne scored the film back in 1978, he scored a masterpiece (in more ways than one), with elements recognisable to everyone.
Wayne more recently took the production on the road, to a lot of success as this DVD shows.
The story is well known, or at least should be. Martians invade earth, arriving by meteorites, and stalking the Earth in their walking tripods. Their heat ray kills all, survivors scratching a survival. The Martians, of course, being so perfect have eliminated all hazardous bacterium and viruses from their home world, and over the millennium their bio defences (immune system) has fallen a long way behind their technological advances. So when they emerge to drink and eat, bingo! Our invisible friends do their worst.
The show itself is a masterpiece. Not something you could watch daily but a wonderful event that you can’t help but catch on DVD.
On stage you have a full electric rock band and an orchestra too, conducted by Jeff Wayne inperson. And behind them on screen you have projected plenty of special effects, aliens, and narration from the original and late Richard Burton.
Certain parts are then acted out (and sung) by actors who come on in front of the orchestra/band, in a very operatic fashion.
Different, but wonderfully done, a real event. In places the music is superlative too. Exceptional throughout.
Any fan of Wayne or War Of The Worlds will love this, really.
Plenty of extras too, including the bringing back of Burton.
Perfect for Christmas.

GREEN ON RED
Valley Fever – Live At The Rialto, Tucson AZ 9/4/05
Brink Film (DVD)

A reunion of some sorts, I gather to remember the original drummer who had passed on.
I guess you have to be an ardent fan to really appreciate this, as for an outsider I found this very hard to retain any interest in.
Kicking off with two members being filmed chatting walking down the street, we get a concert of twin guitar + keyboards country rock, with an occasional hard edged indie sound. But pretty samey throughout. Only a handful of songs make your ears pick up (when they do it is actually quite good, verging on uptempo southern rock), but at the other end of the spectrum you get all that is dull and samey about country rock. Lacking in onstage energy too.
Also lacking – extras.

Robert PLANT & The Strange Sensation
Universal (DVD)

The voice of Led Zeppelin and one of THE voices of rock, taking a different angle here. On stage with this new backing band there is still the electric rock edge mixed with African beats and new world rhythm mixed in with the Page-isms.
The sound works well on the (only) 9 onstage tracks, kicking off with ‘No Quarter’.
Zeppelin’s ‘Black Dog’ sounds good, with Plant bringing his voice a step or two down from the original (still high enough for us mortals) making sure that he can do it well. Rearrange and do well rather than try to copy the original of over 35 years ago and ruin. A success then. Riff-tastic, with touches of reggae and others.
The stage show runs at over an hour and covers his full spectrum of solo work and Zep material too. A good show! And as extras some promo videos, new stuff and a Top Of The Pops appearance.
For Zep fans and more.

VARIOUS
Happening, Alive and Nasty
EMI / Zonophone

EMI are relaunching their Zonophone imprint with this archive look at the punk scene, something which (as the press release points out) labels at the time had no idea to deal with.
And the set is full of gems, classics and rarities, with many single A and B sides appearing and the Strangler’s take on “Mony Mony” under the pseudonym of Celia And The Mutations.
Generation X kick off with “Your Generation”, while “Don’t Dictate” by Penetration has a Paranoid like riff.

Tracks by Buzzcocks, 999, The Maniacs, The Stranglers, Wire, Vibrators, Skids and Leyton Buzzards follow.
There’s some decent punk tracks; a lot of decent tracks and rarities by name bands will attract the casual listener but the lack of any real hits may lose out there. But punk wasn’t about hits, it was just picking up a guitar and a mic and having a thrash and not giving a shit.
In fact the Buzzcocks said “Oh Shit”. Precisely!

FEAR OF MUSIC
We Are Not The Enemy EP
Faster Music

A three track EP of the decent end of guitar pop – with a more of a punk and glam blast. Green Day watch out!
Ballsy, art rock, and passionate too.
Second track ‘A Blueprint’ adds a piano and a power ballad edge to the punk rock.
Antithesis of the X Factor shite, should do well.

Van MORRISON
At The Movies – Soundtrack Hits
EMI 384 2242

Morrison has been recording some decent (and some not so decent) music for 40 years, and this compilation features tracks (solo and with Them) either featured in or inspired by films.
There’s some well known, classic and not so well known tracks and films featured, but this is as good an intro to Van Morrison’s music, regardless of your interest in films; that’s just an added bonus.
‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ is a classic track by any standards (trivia note: It was covered by AC/DC who actually did it better).
We also get live renditions of ‘Domino’ and ‘Moondance’ (American Werewolf In London), the latter previously unreleased. ‘Irish Heartbeat’ with the Chieftains is more of a celtic ballad. And the album finishes with a live rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’, a good song well done (let’s face it, it’s a song almost impossible to ruin).
From rock’n’roll to moody, pop, soul and ballads, he has a wide range. Worth checking out, film buff or otherwise.

The ALMIGHTY
Anth’f***ing’ology (The Gospel According To The Almighty) (CD+DVD)
Sanctuary

A first time complete retrospective for the band, where Almighty is also an accurate description of their rough metal sound: this set features all 13 singles and 4 more tracks chosen by the band, while the DVD features promo videos for the singles and additional extras. Good value and complete package, especially when the packaging has a discography and comments from Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris (with whom the band once toured).
Touches of power metal, with a rough glam/punk edge. ‘Free’n’Easy’ was a minor hit and at the catchy end of The Almighty, a good rockin’ metal anthem.
There’s stuff here for the collector and it’s a good intro / all purpose compilation too. Almighty indeed.

The STYLE COUNCIL
Our Favourite Shop
Polydor / Universal

Paul Weller’s post Jam project, and this album has its moments for sure, but is a bit of a mixed bag.
Perhaps it was a reaction to The Jam, but the angle on the songwriting here is overtly mature, in places too serious. Some great tunes but openers ‘Homebreakers’ and ‘All Gone Away’ would, on first listen, have Jam fans running to the hills. Just too whimsical.
A few tracks in and we get ‘Internationalists’ which stands out, it features some fire.
‘Boy Who Cried Wolf’ is more new wave pop. ‘A Man Of Great Promise’ is better Weller, while ‘Down The Siene’ nods at uptempo acoustic ELP.
Tagged on the is the end are a US Remix and instrumental versions of Style Council’s big hit ‘Shout To The Top’, a welcome listen.
There is a second disc featuring bonus cuts, including live and demo versions. A decent package and some good tracks, but not Weller’s finest album.

Patrik CARLSSON
Melodic Travel
Lion Music LMC192

An interesting album that opens with a heavy chunky riff and a decent guitar tune with some minimalistic percussion before full band come in. Elegant in its simplicity; the guitar talks without going at 100MPH.
Track 2 (you can tell I’m working on minimal info here) is a little more electronic, but still rhythmic and not overtly complicated.
The guitar on track 3 is a more jovially widdly, the backing track light hearted.
So there you have a template, instrumental melodic and oft rhythmic metal, with some neat guitar touches.
An interesting listen if ‘coffee table metal’.

MAMA’S BOYS
Power And Passion
Gott Discs

This classic 1985 album on CD at last, hard powerful anthemic AOR from this Irish trio, the McManus brothers. Opener ‘Hard’n’Loud’ is classic if a touch cliché, while ‘Straight Forward’ adds some slide guitar and nods towards the Triumph power trio sound.
Power And Passion probably saw the band’s musical and commercial highlight, with the band fragmenting in the late 80s with the addition of a vocalist and the drummer taking time out with leukaemia.
Sadly no extras but some informative sleevenotes make for a good release

Uli Jon ROTH
The Best Of (2CD)
SPV 95732-2CD

The former Scorpions guitarist really pioneered innovation and neo classical metal guitar. To the point of making Malmsteen look a staid amateur. I jest not, and if you’re not familiar with Roth’s solo work, this is as good a point to start as any.
Much of the work here is orchestrated, and there are takes and arrangements on well known classical pieces as well as his own material.
Three Tenors fans will recognise ‘Bridge To Heaven’, while the fast guitar work on ‘Pegasus’ is just so fluid.
Disc 2 opens with ‘Still So Many Lives Away’ which shows he rock out with the best.
Many guests are present here, including Don Airey, Jack Bruce, Nicky Moore, Barry Sparks, Clive Bunker and more. Sadly the notes (good history) make reference to a non existent track.
But Damn good work from a genuine guitar god.

KREATOR
Enemy Of God Revisited (CD+DVD)
SPV

Top level European thrash, the German Slayer, pioneers of ‘Hate’ metal, Kreator are all and this album shows exactly why.
2005’s Enemy Of God was a class album at the extreme end of metal and this re-release adds a DVD. Between the 2 discs you get a 5.1DTS mix of the album (this really is crystal clear, fans will really appreciate this), bonus live cuts, a full live concert and more.
The album surprised me, it’s the first time I’d really sat down and listened to Kreator, and if you’re into the most extreme metal this is, as they say, the Dog’s Bollocks.

KAMELOT
One Cold Winter’s Night (2DVD)
SPV

Already reviewed here as a 2CD, this DVD of the same show augments the superb American extreme power metal with full concert visuals and sound quality to match.
The music you’ve already ready about, this DVD shows the band’s energy, stage show, theatrics, pyrotechnics, crowd enthusiasm.
High energy power metal with touches of melodic symphonic speed metal, some classics, some long almost progressive songs, and a few guests along the way; the music is well worth checking out.
While the 2-CD is probably of wider appeal (if you don’t own any Kamelot, you should, this one!), the DVD is more for the fan but well worth it.

WHITESNAKE
Live In The Heart Of The City
Come An’ Get It
Saints And Sinners
All EMI

The latest batch of Whitesnake remasters kicks off in fine form with the classic live set Live In The Heart Of The City (4/5). The original LP was a double set, the first LP a full live set from Hammersmith 1980 which kicks off with ‘Come On’. Plenty of “’ere’s a song for ya” from old Coverdale, we also get ‘Sweet Talker’, ‘Walking In Shadow Of The Blues’, ‘Love Hunter’, ‘Fool For Your Loving’ and more, including the title track. Classic Whitesnake at their best. Hard blues rock, solid vocals, Jon Lord’s brilliant keyboards backing up the twin guitar of Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody. Essential listening.
Now expanded, disc 2 is that second LP, so we now get both sets in full (the original single CD didn’t manage that), with 6 tracks from Hammersmith 1978 originally released as a mini live album in Japan that year. That duplicates a couple of tracks but adds ‘Trouble’ and ‘Lie Down’ and also Deep Purple’s ‘Mistreated’, a long time Coverdale favourite.
Come An’ Get It (5/5) shows Whitesnake at their best in the studio. The classic line up too of Coverdale, Moody, Marsden, Murray, Lord and Paice. The title track opens and is a little smooth, but considering we get “Don’t Break My Heart Again” (classic rock riff and blues organ), “Wine Women An’ Song” (boogie piano breaks into hard rock boogie like you wouldn’t believe) and “Would I Lie To You” (as subtle as Coverdale gets), it’s an unmissable set.
Saints And Sinners (4/5) from 1982 was not quite as strong, but ‘Rough An’ Ready’ and ‘Bloody Luxury’ stand out. And don’t forget ‘Crying In The Rain’ and ‘Here I Go Again’; pivotal. And a proper Whitesnake lesson for those who only know the more commercial big haired rerecordings of the late 80s. Sadly the line-up didn’t last long, with Colin Hodgekinson, Cozy Powell and Mel Galley coming for Murray, Paice and Marsden repectively, to tour the album.
The two studio albums come with bonus tracks too, rough / demo versions.

December 19, 2006 -- Jeff Scott Soto has been officially named the new lead singer of Journey. He had been filling in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the U.S. tour with Def Leppard shortly after it began on June 23 due to illness.

"We are so grateful to Steve for all the years he dedicated to Journey," says Journey in a joint statement. "We thank Steve for all his hard work and we wish him only the best in his future endeavors. Over the past few months, we've come to realize that Jeff has proven himself above and beyond that he can sing the hell out of our songs and we're happy to officially welcome him as part of the family. We're excited to start a new chapter with Jeff and we're excited about what the future may bring."

Steve Augeri states: "Singing for Journey these last eight years have been the most challenging and the most rewarding of my career. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the band, and especially the fans, for the privilege of being part of a musical legacy that has touched so many hearts and souls. I wish my fellow bandmates success and happiness as they continue to make great music in the future, as I will strive to do the same myself."

Jeff Soto also adds, "With delight & pleasure, I am accepting the offer to continue my tenure with Journey now as their permanent vocalist after the amazing past months we've spent together on tour. I also pay high respect to Steve Augeri for coming in and helping Journey continue their legacy for nearly the last decade and to Steve Perry for co-creating this legacy. I hope to now add and help drive Journey into the next stage of this band's future."

Since Soto's first appearance with Journey on July 7 in Bristow, VA, his performances have been garnering rave reviews. To wit:

"Right off the bat, Journey's new lead singer is fantastic. Jeff Scott Soto is a supremely talented vocalist who handled with ease the many sky-high notes and the mile-long range in Journey's repertoire. Steve Perry fans have never gotten over the original lead singer's departure from the band, but I'm here to tell you this guy rocks the role. And yes, if you close your eyes he sounds just like Perry, but -- dare I say it? -- maybe even more passionate and full of verve. Hits such as `I'll Be Alright Without You' and `Wheel in the Sky' showcased his mighty voice." --Lorilee Craker, Grand Rapids Press

"The one-time Yngwie Malmsteen vocalist channeled (Steve) Perry flawlessly, nailing all the high notes and then some…Soto's got it going on." --Christopher John Treacy, Boston Herald

"Could Soto cut it? Yes. And then some. His vocals and stage presence were impressive." --Dave Ferman, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

"Soto is a really strong vocalist, so instead of struggling to emulate (Steve) Perry's laser-beam vibrato, he can get away with a style that mixes grainy power with effortless key changes." --Johnny Loftus, Metro Times Detroit

Steve Augeri is currently recording his debut solo album, IN THE MOMENT, due out the summer of 2007. He's also putting the finishing touches on the much-anticipated follow-up to the AOR classic TALL STORIES album, launching early next year.

Journey--Neal Schon (guitar), Ross Valory (bass), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Jeff Scott Soto (vocals)— are currently mapping out plans for 2007.

HYDROGYN ‘Bombshell’ Chavis Records (2006) www.hydrogyn.com

Hydrogyn, fronted by the good looking Julie (see website for pics!) have already charted on the Billboard Heatseekers chart in the US and after hearing this album you can see why. Julie’s vocal range is wide be it the gentle opening to ‘Vesper’s Song’ or belting it out on the cover of AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ she is a top notch vocalist. It’s like After Forever and Evanescence but without the goth trappings and more metal guitars. ‘Breaking Me Down’ and ‘Confession’ really get the old adrenalin pumping whilst ‘Whisper’ sees the band step down a gear producing an almost AOR sounding tune. With Michael Wagner (Ozzy) in the production chair the album has a rich, deep sound and if you like female fronted metal/hard rock bands this album is a ‘must have’. Roll on album number two, but in the meantime catch them on tour in 2007 including UK dates in Feb and March!

THE HEDRONS ‘Heatseeker’ (CDS 2007) Measured Records www.thehedrons.com

Their main claim to fame so far is that they performed the first UKI band to play a virtual gig via MySpace. Not sure how many watched it but with all the hype over MySpace and You Tube it would be a sizeable audience I am sure. This new single is a decent enough guitar led tune although nothing special but sure to get their brief spotlight on the likes of XFM and in NME.

Press Release / Buckcherry's smash hit single Crazy Bitch has earned a Grammy nomination from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in the category of Best Hard Rock Performance. The lead single from the gold certified release, 15 (Eleven Seven Music/Atlantic Records), Crazy Bitch is currently the most played song at Rock radio along with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dani California.
15 is the band's first studio album in four years released in the U.S. in April 2006 with a debut at #2 on the Independent Album Chart. The out-of-the-box success of 15 gained the attention of Atlantic Records who immediately brought them up in the ranks adding them to the roster.
Buckcherry lead singer and co-founder Josh Todd reacted to the news: "Who would have thought you could record an album in fifteen days, release it independently, have it go gold and get nominated for a Grammy in less than a year? SINNER ‘Mask Of Sanity’ MTM Music (2007) www.mtm-music.com

Mat Sinner and his band have been going since the mid-80’s and now he has a more hands on role with the label MTM, whereby he is signing more heavier and modern rock bands than the label’s more melodic fare. The band have had a few line-up changes as well with ex-Primal Fear drummer Klaus Sperling joining permanently and a new guitarist Christof Leim.
Musically this is solid, classic metal which occasionally rises up to some cracking tunes like ‘The Sign’ and ‘The Other Side’ but for the most part is fine to listen to but nothing really special. Sure the guitar solos are good and Matt Sinner’s vocals have that heavy metal power in them but many tines just lack that spark to really want you to play this album again and again.
If you are already a fan of the band then this will doubtless keep you happy, otherwise listen to a few songs first as it is not a ‘must have’.

DANIEL McMASTER ‘Rock Bonham and the Long Road Back’ Sun City Records (2006) www.suncityrecords.com

Who you may ask? Well Daniel McMaster was the vocalist with Bonham, a band who released two wonderful albums and featured the band’s namesake Jason Bonham (later to pop up in UFO and now Foreigner). This is a collection of demos he has recorded from 1991 onwards. Bearing in mind that these tracks need that final production polish they are very good! Think Tesla in their slower mode, in fact ‘Is She Falling?’ and ‘Walk With Me’ would have Tesla fans in raptures. But the real treat on here are four Bonham demos that have been released before. ‘Friend of Mine’ hints a real Led Zep groove, whilst ‘Great Confusion’ is just a great no frills rock track. Shame they never made that third album…
Obviously one for fans of Bonham but is m ore than just a collectors’ gem in that the solo tracks are very good and as mentioned previously would give Tesla a run for their money!

After two long years the wait is over. The third and final episode of the Genius Rock Opera, written and performed by the Italian multitalented musician Daniele Liverani, is now ready to be unleashed to its devoted fans on February 16th 2007!
This last chapter of the trilogy entitled "The Final Surprise" will reveal what happened to Genius and his guide Twinspirits 32 at the end of their long journey into dreams' world.
We left the two main characters on the threshold of the Asian fantasies warehouse, in front of a dark underworld. They were aware that the little prince was there, hidden in one of those warehouses, but they soon realised they were in front of a huge maze, full of an infinite number of fantasy warehouses.
Now...which one was the toy warehouse where the prince was hidden? Running through almost 80 minutes of various music styles, the listener will be led by the storyteller (Philip Bynoe) through the final events of the saga and discover what happened to Genius once he woke up to go back to reality world.
You will finally learn if the little prince will be saved, and if the dreams world will be safe forever. Lots of titanic vocal duels are featured in this episode including the amazing duet performed by characters Twinspirits 32 (Daniel Gildenlow of PAIN OF SALVATION) and Apikor (Jorn Lande, ex MASTERPLAN) and between Twinspirits 32 (Daniel Gildenlow) and Genius (this time performed by a majestic DC Cooper of SILENT FORCE).
Other great singers give their interpretation of the characters in this final episode: Eric Martin as Mr. Niko, Toby Hitchcock (of PRIDE OF LIONS) as Senator Jeramus and Andrea Dätwyler (of LUNATICA) as Kokeshi Doll. This breathtaking episode of Genius' is the final act and an amazing mind trip into the unknown parallel dimension where dreams are created. The dream is over but don't miss the surprises this Opera still has in store!
Drum tracks for the album were laid as usual by Dario Ciccioni, while Oliver Hartmann took care of the monster chorus vocal work.

Tracklisting of the album includes the following songs: Toy Warehouse; No More Chances; Save Me From My Destiny; Alive and Safe; Jump Off This Train; Let Me Live; Inside These Memories; I Die; Back To Life Again; Dream In Liberty; The Final Surprise.

Release date of the album has been set on February 16th 2007 on Frontiers Records, with a release in Japan scheduled on King Records.

HONEYMOON SUITE ‘Feel It Again: An Anthology’ Gott Discs (2006) www.gottdiscs.com

This two disc set is a real treat for fans of the band and those yet to sample the delights of these Canadian melodic rock masters. Their two big albums were ‘The Big Prize’ and ‘Racing After Midnight’, both amply represented on here. Revel in the melodic rock gem of ‘Feel It Again’ (one of the rock tunes of the 80’s), the driving rocker ‘Bad Attitude’ and the pop rock of ‘All Along He Knew’. Disc one has some added treats in the shape of the previously unreleased on CD ‘I Believe In Father Christmas’ (originally by Greg Lake), which is simply superb! Disc two covers the output from the 90’s onwards and includes tracks form their ‘Lemon Tongue’ album, which has a revised tracklisting for the European release on Frontiers under the name of ‘Dreamland’. The band add eight unreleased tracks of which ‘Under My Skin’ and ‘My Right Hand’ (whose lyrics can be read in many ways!) are the pick of the bunch.
Excuse all the superlatives in this review but Honeymoon Suite really are an underrated band who many may not realize they were still going throughout the 90’s and have a new studio album all set for release in 2007. This is how compilations should be done – the classic songs and unreleased tracks to entice in the fans.

NORWAY Rising Up From The Ashes’ MTM (2007) www.mtm-music.com

US melodic rockers who return with a new album, that includes some of their older tunes and newly recorded tunes. This is unashamed classic melodic rock – big choruses, huge harmonies, neat guitar solos and swirling keys. ‘Save Me’ is a prime example with its catchy chorus and I defy anyone not to love this song! ‘Anything At All’ is a mid-tempo number that again sees the keys and guitars used to good effect. ‘American Girl’ is prime time radio rock, yes it is nothing original but by golly it knocks the spots of many similar bands. Dig those bells as well! ‘Tell Me’ sounds like Survivor, whilst the acoustic ballad ‘Won’t Let You Down’ you could imagine fans getting the lighters out in the arenas.
Along with Final Frontier, Norway keeps classic melodic rock alive and well. An essential addition for the New Year.

MOLLY HATCHET ‘The Deed Is Done’ Gott Discs (2006) www.gottdiscs.com

Originally released back in 1984 and marking the return of vocalist Danny Joe Brown, this album saw the band veer into the more AOR/melodic rock style of .38 Special (Survivor’s Jimi Jamison pops up on backing vocals further adding that melodic rock feel), although the duelling guitars of Duane Roland and Dave Hlubek were still present and correct. Using ZZ Top producer Terry Manning also saw greater use of synths coupled with the drum sound of ZZ Top’s ‘Eliminator’ and ‘Afterburner’ albums. Doubtless on its original release many long term fans would have been shocked at the smoother, radio friendly sound. As for the music well ‘She Does She Does’ is a cracking rocker with some tasty sax breaks, whilst ‘Satisfied Man’ sounds like .38 Special meets ZZ Top. ‘Stone In Your Heart’ is a classy radio rocker, whilst the acoustic picking instrumental ‘Song For The Children’ is a neat way to finish the album. A few tracks fall below par including ‘Backstabber’ which overstays its welcome due to the repetitive chorus.
Not your typical Molly Hatchet album then but one that is worthy of getting especially if you like the more radio friendly southern rock of .38 Special and Wet Willie.

T.A.O – The Abnormal Observations Unicorn Records (2006)

You never know what you are getting when you open the envelope and your faced with a promo from a band you know nothing about, and have never heard of.
This wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but they never are?
The opening song is progressive, almost jazz fusion like, with a few bars of heavy guitars thrown in.
Mostly instrumental, it dosen’t get boring, it’s not too self indulgent and quite pleasant.
Instrumentally everything is just pretty good here, it’s when guitar, Adam Jurewicz, opens his mouth and attempts to sing, that thing start to go pear shaped. Some of his melodies, are a little on the abstract, his actual singing voice, isn’t nearly as good as the instrumental prowess, that he and the rest of T.A.O show throughout, what is quite a strong release, their second album overall.
For old prog heads like myself, this is music to my ears, the widdly diddly bits are kept to a minimum, but are more than enough for more mainstream listeners. The songs themselves, do appear to be songs and not merely vehicles for the bands instrumental abilities.
By the end of the album, I am almost enjoying the vocal too, almost.

House Of Lords – Live In The UK Frontiers (2006) www.frontiers.it

I must admit, I am a very old fan of House Of Lords, their glory days of their killer self titled debut album.
It must have been at least 15 years since I’ve heard them, so I was more than intrigued when this, new release came my way.
As the title says, recorded live in the UK, we get 12 live songs, and a ‘bonus’ new studio track in, ‘Havana’.
Which was originally found on the Japanese version of “The Power & The Myth” album.
Recorded at Firefest Festival in Nottingham on November 26th 2005, the whole show is included here. Though sometimes the crowd mix is a little too high for the venue capacity, it all adds up to a very decent sounding concert memento.
The band sound just fine, more importantly, vocalist James Christian, strong, passionate larynx sounds just as I remember it from all those years ago.
A pretty decent song selection, I can’t complain about the inclusion or omission of anything on offer here really.
Self produced, the mix is sometimes a little on the muddy side, clear, sharp, but lacking that sparkle, that would give it top marks.
There you have it, a solid live album, from yet another band on the comeback trial.

The BLACK SABBATH DIO-era box set gets a US release on 2nd April in the US via Rhino.

Megadeth's new DVD entitled THAT ONE NIGHT: LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES is due out March 6th.

The Cure front man Robert Smith has earmarked May 2007 for the release of the bands 14th studio album. The group make their live return in March and the band had hoped to release the follow up to 2004’s self titled album around the same time. However, despite 30 years in the business, Robert Smith is suffering from writers block.
Smith explained to Billboard:
"I want them (the words) to mean something, it's not enough that they rhyme. I find myself stopping short and thinking I've done this before, and better.
I've given myself a deadline to finish the words before Christmas. If I don't I should be shot," he said. The new album is shaping up to be a mix of mournful songs alongside more energetic and upbeat cuts.”

The BEATLES debut at no.4 in the US album charts last week. Other rock acts debuts include U2 at no.18, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE at no.32, TOM WAITS at no.74 and OASIS at no.89.
This week INCUBUS debut at no.1, the BEATLES drop down to no.5 and the ROCKSTAR SUPERNOVA album disappears without a trace…

Drummer Mike Terrana has left RAGE to join MASTERPLAN.

One of Britain’s best-loved bands, ORANGE GOBLIN are going to make 2007 their year.
Last month saw the band sign on the dotted line with Sanctuary Records – in London’s notorious Crobar, natch! – and they celebrate their new recording contract by playing an end-of-year show at The Mean Fiddler in December.
Following European dates early in the new year, the band will return to the studio in March to put the finishing touches to the new album – provisionally-titled Thee Plague Of London, due for release in May 2007 - and will play a full UK tour in May before performing at a number of European festivals throughout the summer of 2007.

Sequel is proud to announce that they have recently signed with Texas based Perris Records. Their new CD, entitled BACK, is scheduled for release in January of 2007 and will enjoy a worldwide release and distribution.
BACK, the third full-length album from Sequel, is hard rockin' and radio-friendly. Packed with melody and guitars, the CD showcases the shared lead vocals of bassist Todd Jensen (David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Steve Perry, Paul Rodgers, Neal Schon, Hardline) and guitarist/songwriter Greg Georgeson (Tommy TuTone). Additional original members include David Wall (guitar) and Grant Roholt (drums).
Perris Signs Sweden's Own Blind Alley; DESTINATION DESTINY For 2007 Worldwide Release!
Blind Alley had managed to gather the best pieces from the melodic field and also some of the best written songs to come out of Sweden in a long time. Some of you might be familiar with these boys from before, they have released one album in 2003 called INFINITY ENDS. DESTINATION DESTINY is for fans of Giant, Journey and Survivor.

THERION - "GOTHIC KABBALAH" NUCLEAR BLAST (2007)

There are many bands which I consider to be amongst my personal favourites and which, having established their personal style/sound, choose to follow the "safe" option by producing albums of a similar musical approach - the names are numerous and not important to be mentioned in this review. What is important is to recognise the artistic value of bands like Therion who, with every new release, manage to re-invent themselves, whilst still retaining the interest of their loyal supporters.

Three years ago, Christofer Johnsson and Co released their operatic/symphonic masterpiece "Lemuria/Serius B" - a double release that was featured in my list of the best albums of 2004. Since then quite a few changes have taken place, both in terms of line up and musical arrangements, but one thing certainly remained the same - Therion's ability to create outstanding music, the latest representation of which is the double CD "Gothic Kabbalah".

I have to admit that my introduction to this album left me with quite a few questions. My original impression was that the band's latest compositions were stripped of the majestic operatic parts that had a predominant role in previous albums, to the point that Therion now sounded more like a Power Metal band than the powerful symphonic metal outfit that we all know and love. Do I still support this argument, having had the time to listen to and analyse the music of "Gothic Kabbalah" more carefully?

Well, "Gothic Kabbalah" may indeed find Therion sounding more heavy and straight-forward than in their previous efforts, but at the same time, it contains compositions such as "T.O.F - The Trinity", whose musical complexity can only classify them as operatic progressive power metal anthems. There is a great change/improvement in the vocal section, with Mats Leven sounding much more involved in the compositions and up to his game, thus giving extra colour and character to songs like "The Perennial Sophia", accompanied by the double female contribution of Katarina Lilja and Hannah Holgersson, recording some of the best female vocals to date. Having given up his vocal contributions completely, guitar wizard Christofer Johnsson was more free to invest in his heavy riffs and beautifully arranged guitar melodies, which make songs like the same-titled "Gothic Kabbalah", the epic "Son of the Staves of Time", the folky-sounding "Trul" and the low-tuned atmospheric masterpiece "Close Up the Streams" sound totally irresistible. Closer to the spirit of classic Therion, the dark/atmospheric sounding jewels "Three Treasures", "The Wand of Abaris" and “Adulruna Redivivia” should receive your utmost attention, just as "Tuna 1613" which once again proves Christofer's love and appreciation of the almighty Scorpions.

I never claimed that I have listened to everything that this band has to offer, yet I have to admit that Therion took me totally by surprise with this wonderful release. “Gothic Kabbalah” is the kind of album that will give you more with every new spin, and as such, will quite deservedly impose its presence in your CD collection. Less than a month before the arrival of the new year, Christofer Johnsson and Co are presenting us with "Gothic Kabbalah" - an album that will without doubt dominate the playlists of many music journalists. Cannot wait to get my hands on it!

Frontiers Records is immensely proud to officially announce the signing of Night Ranger for the release of their brand new studio album Hole in the Sun!

Like no other band formed in the 80s, Night Ranger has both epitomized and transcended the sound and style of that decade. Since original members Jack Blades, Jeff Watson, Kelly Keagy and Brad Gillis reunited in 1996, they have brought their guitar-crunching, melodic brand of hard rock into the 21st century with unparalleled talent, energy and creativity.
Night Ranger left an indelible mark with a string of best-selling albums that sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. The band's popularity was fueled by an impressive string of instantly recognizable hit singles and signature album tracks, including Sister Christian, (You Can Still) Rock In America, When You Close Your Eyes, Sentimental Street, Goodbye and Don't Tell Me You Love Me. Harnessing the frenetic drive of heavy metal to hook-laden rockers, a stunning twin lead guitar team, and melodious, radio-friendly power ballads, Night Ranger inspired new descriptive phrases such as melodic metal and metal power pop, and became the standard-bearer of a new sound.
Following a seven-year absence, Night Ranger reunited in 1996 for a World tour. The overwhelming response proved the continued love for the music and the band. That year also garnered the Ron Nevison produced album Neverland, featuring the radio friendly single Forever All Over Again.
In 1997, the three-time Oscar-nominated film Boogie Nights spotlighted Sister Christian as one of the songs that defined the previous decade. Also that year, the band released Seven, a studio album that helped set the standard for the 80s rock revival.
Since then Night Ranger members have been busy individually in several solo projects, while the band kept active touring across the USA and Japan. Writing and recording sessions for a brand new studio album started at the end of 2005, with progresses in between the busy schedules of the band members. "I can't believe it is almost 2007!" admits bass player and singer Jack Blades. "Most of the songs were written at the end of 2005 and recording happened at my Barn Studio (The Cock and Bottle studio) and Jeff's studio (Camp Watson)."
"I think you just keep making records and writing the songs that are in your heart", continues Blades. "As long as we continue to write and record with passion and integrity, (which we have done) I believe the fans will enjoy the ride. I personally am very proud of all the records Night Ranger has made over the 20 plus years of our career. This record reflects the years of touring so it rocks pretty hard. It also speaks to where the band is musically in 2006. Lots of split vocals and dual guitars."
With song titles as There Is Life, Tell your Vision, Drama Queen, Rock Star, White Knuckle Ride and Whatever Happened, Night Ranger music and attitude has now come full circle. Great melodies, blazing guitars and fun crazy rocking live shows..."it is all we know how to do", admits Blades.
We know we all can look forward to the release of Hole in the Sun during the spring of 2007!

"The Dark Gift" EP gives an alternative look for the fans to the music of Satyrian and also breaks musical borders with its remixes made by TmV from the Finnish gothic and Electro band "Shade Factory" and by Roman Schoensee of The Dreamside, as well as Satyrian's own Jan Yrlund during the last six months. The Dark Gift is presented as a limited edition digi-pack package with stunning artwork.

Patrik Carlsson - Melodic Travel - Patrik Carlsson is one of a hot new generation of exciting instrumental guitarists to have come out of Sweden in the new millennium. His debut release Phraseology (LMC107) was released in 2004 on Lion Music and now his follow up Melodic Travel sees Patrik take a turn into more traditional music waters to produce a very visual and melodic instrumental release that combines Patrik's guitar flash with some folk and jazz inflections.
On the new music's nature Patrik comments, "This was first meant to be a folk/jazz-inspired trip to the heart of Swedish traditional music. But then I change my mind and started to explore various sidetracks and musical solutions. The final result was a lot of different alternatives and in the search for the melodic treasures new discoveries were made". "The melodic travel begins in the deep forests of the northern mountains. You will hear the sound of ancient workers with their tools and the melody once created with the violins celebrating their lifestyle. Having passed through different environments and landscapes the adventure will end up in a red cottage on a small island far away from modern civilisation, where the water and the winds are quiet and the sunset soon will pass into darkness."
Each song on Melodic Travel has its own story, and to accompany the release Patrik's official website (www.figstamper.com) will have illustrations to visualise each song's story and mood.
Track Listing: 1. Settler's Pleasure, 2. Battlefield, 3. Kristiina's Song, 4. Caribbean Uptempo, 5. Gate to Heaven, 6. Liberty City, 7. Luxian Minor, 8. Archipelago Blues, 9. Night Vision, 10. the Great A, 11. Hip `n Melodic, 12. Desederia, 13. Happy Quarter, 14. Naboo, 15. Spanish Vaganza, 16. Silence.

Upcoming releases in January 2007 -
Engine Of Pain - I Am Your Enemy - A very heavy release in the vein of Testament, Pantera and The Haunted. Engine of Pain are one of the hottest metal bands to have hailed from the Netherlands in the last few years and with their debut full length debut "I Am Your Enemy" the band have produced an album that is a non compromising sonic statement from start to finish.
Massimo Izzizzari - Unstable Balance - Great guitar instrumental with great songs.

FAITH AND FIRE ‘Accelerator’ Metal Heaven (2007)

The name may not mean much to you but the band members certainly will as they include Riot’s Mike Flyntz and Tony Moore (he sang on Riot’s classic ‘Thundersteel’ album) plus bass player Danny Miranda, ex-Blue Oyster Cult now part of Queen’s touring band. This album reminds me so much of latter day Blue Oyster Cult, with Moore’s vocals at times sounding like BOC’s Buck Dharma on the quieter tunes such as the lighters aloft ballad ‘Angel’. ‘Ready’ sets the standard perfectly – hard rocking riffs, powerful vocals plus anti-Bush lyrics. Very Riot in sound but with more emphasis on the harmonies, both guitars and vocals (something that prevails throughout the whole album). ‘Radio Superstar’ and the title track could easily gain airplay on rock radio, as both possess strong choruses and again great guitar parts.
Don’t let this little gem getaway as it is a must have for fans of Riot, BOC and lovers of well crafted hard rock/classic metal.

BURNING POINT ‘Burned Down The Enemy’ Metal Heaven (2007)

Finland is a hotbed for power/melodic/epic metal and Burning Point are yet another classy outfit from that part of the world. This is their third album and first for Metal Heaven. Musically it touches all the right bases – epic songs, lots of guitar sols, layers of keys and a powerhouse vocalist in the shape of Pete Ahonen. The first six songs are great with opener ‘Parasite’ and ‘Hell Awaits’ a good chance for the old air keyboards! Sadly though the album peters out after this although ‘Eye For An Eye’ is another good power metal romp.
Not a bad album at all and if you enjoy power metal with a nice dash of keys then this is well worth getting.

THE DOORS ‘Perceptions’ Rhino (2006) Six CD/six DVD box set

One for all Doors fans this little gem as you get their studio albums re-issued in 2-disc (CD & DVD) editions plus unreleased tracks and 5.1 surround sound mix. If that wasn’t enough you get six DVD’s which include live footage, photo galleries etc. This promo CD is a 21 track highlights so I can’t comment on the whole thing but having seen the finished item in stores it does look rather splendid. Personally I am not a big Doors fan but even I enjoyed listening to ‘Riders On The Storm’, ‘People Are Strange’ and the alternate takes on ‘Roadhouse Blues’, where the band let fly musically.
A ‘must have’ for fans of the band with bonus tracks on here to entice the fans who will doubtless already have all the albums.

EVERGREY have started work on their new album for release later next year.

BRUCE KULICK has started work on a new solo album.

JIZZY PEARL has left RATT according to a posting on his website and it looks ever more likely the band will re-unite with the surviving original line-up.

IN FLAMES will be without both guitarists for their upcoming US tour with Lacuna Coil. Bjorn Gelott is taking time off to be with his wife, who's expecting the couple's second child, while Jesper Stromblad is dealing with personal issues. EVERGREY's Henrik Danhage and Niklas Engelin will replace them.

RICKY TOMLINSON ‘Christmas My Arse’ (CDS 2006) EMI

TV star Ricky Tomlinson throws his hat into the ring for this year’s UK Christmas number one single and he has good odds although the X-Factor winner is always the bookies choice at this time of year. This tune bemoans all that is Christmas – same crap on TV, arguing relatives – the bad side of the season in other words. Set to a Quo like beat its listenable but like the turkey at Christmas I am sure you’d be throwing this away come the New Year…

HARTMANN ‘Home’ Frontiers (2007) www.frontiers.it

Oliver Hartmann returns with a highly polished melodic rock album that has some very good songs. Pick of the bunch has to be opener ‘Coming Home To You’ with its keys and programming coupled with a very catchy chorus. ‘My Everything Is You’ tugs at the old heartstrings whilst ‘Millionaire’ is a good piece of heavy pop rock. The overall sound is very polished and not a million miles away from what Steve Newman does so well. The album does dip midway through but overall a pleasurable listen and recommended for lovers of polished melodic rock.

KELLY KEAGY ‘I’m Alive’ Frontiers (2007) www.frontiers.it

Night Ranger’s drummer/vocalist is back with his new solo album and this time around Jim Peterik (Pride of Lions/Survivor) and Reb Beach (Winger/Whitesnake) are helping out. Also Tommy Denander (Radioactive), Bruce Gaitsch (Unruly Child) and Michael Lardie (Night Ranger/Great White) guest amongst others.
There is a good mix of songs on here from the big ballads ‘Everything I Need In A Woman’ through to the rockers ‘Stolen’ and the title track. One thing missing though is a real driving rock song that would lift the album up. Keagy’s vocals are as good as always and there are some tasty guitar solos on the songs this time around.
If you enjoyed his first solo album this is a natural successor, although this time there is more emphasis on the mid tempo/ballads side of things doubtless bought about by Jim Peterik! A proper solo album though in that its sound is a step away from that of his main band Night Ranger.

Quiet Riot “Rehab” Demolition Records (Cat No DEMCD 157)

From the pounding opening track “Free” this new Quiet Riot CD captures the bands classic sound but with modern overtones throughout. Original members, vocalist Kevin DuBrow and drummer Frankie Banali, are joined by bassist Tony Franklin (Ex- Blue Murder) and session guitarist Neil Citron, and have produced an album worthy of the Quiet Riot name. Outstanding tracks include “Blind Faith”, the anthemic “South Of Heaven”, the slow building “Beggars and Thieves” and “Don’t Think”.

Tracks to Burn? “Free”, “South Of Heaven” and “Don’t Think”.
Why Buy? This CD will not disappoint long term, and new, fans of the band.

Peter Hook (New Order, Joy Division), Mani (Primal Scream, Stones Roses) and Andy Rourke (The Smiths) have formed a group called Freebase.

Alter Bridge are currently working hard on their 2nd album with bassist Brian Marshall giving the following comment on their website:
“Hello everyone, glad to see you all are hanging in there. We have been in writing mode here in Orlando for some time, awaiting word on engineers/producers/labels to start recording. Looks like we are getting very close to the pre-production of our second record. We've all decided that these some 20 songs are probably the best we have ever created and if we don't get them tracked soon we will be pulling our hair out, locking the doors and beating eachother to a pulp. Just kidding of course. We have had our hands tied and anxiously await to share it with you all....until later...your 5 string friend, bringing the thunder... Brian Marshall”.

The track details for the two new 2007 NIGHT RANGER releases have been announced.
The band recently completed work on their new studio album, their first since 1998's Seven release. It looks like the album will be titled Hole In The Sun and will feature the following tracks: Tell Your Vision . Drama Queen . Whatever Happened . There is Life . Rock Star . You're Gonna Hear From Me . Fool in Me . White Knuckle Ride . Revelation 4am . Hole In The Sun . Being . Wrap it Up.
In addition to that release, there is the Live In Japan 2003 release lined up, which will feature the following tracks: Don't Tell Me You Love Me . Four In The Morning . Goodbye . Rumours In The Air . Sentimental Street . Seven Wishes . Sing Me Away . Sister Christian . When You Close Your Eyes . You Can Still Rock In America.

“The Almighty are definitely one of the best bands to have played with us through the years. They’ve always been a special band and special people. Listen to this anthology and you’ll see why”. – Steve Harris (Iron Maiden).

The Almighty, the recently reformed eight legged axe-grinding machine who brought the house down when they headlined the Bulldog Bash 2006, are set to tour the UK in December, a month prior to the release of their ‘Anth’f***Ing’ology The Gospel According To…’ CD/DVD on Sanctuary Records on February 5th 2007. Dates are:-

Tue. December 26th Nottingham Rock City (£15)
Wed. December 27th London Shepherds Bush Empire (£17.50)
Thu. December 28th Sheffield Corporation (£15)
Fri. December 29th Newcastle Academy (£15)
Sat. December 30th Glasgow Garage (£15)

‘Anth’f***Ing’ology The Gospel According To…’ is the Almighty’s first ever comprehensive career assessment. Included on the CD (Disc One) are all 13 singles the Almighty ever released, plus select bonus tracks compiled by the band themselves, taken from their seven studio albums to date. Included on the DVD (Disc Two) are all the promo videos shot for the singles, plus extras. The accompanying booklet is crammed with photos and memorabilia together with a complete band discography and extensive sleeve notes, written by Classic Rock Magazine’s Dave Ling and Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris.

After detonating onto the UK metal scene in 1988, The Almighty released a succession of top 40 singles and powerful top 20 albums, rammed with fearsome metal commandments and chest bursting anthems, before finally imploding in 2001.

When bassist Floyd London was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in September 2004, he was given only a 50/50 chance of survival of the immediate course of chemotherapy he was prescribed. “I would’ve been dead within weeks had I not gone to see the doctor,” marvels Floyd at the memory. “Fortunately, I responded well to the aggressive treatment.”

Indebted to the medical staff that had treated him, London galvanised the Ricky Warwick / Stumpy Munroe / Pete Friesen line-up of The Almighty into two reunion gigs early in 2006, raising £25,000 for Leukaemia research in the process. The band had the time of their lives playing again and agreed to headline the Bulldog Bash in August 2006, where they had the massive crowd of bikers and rock lovers eating out of their hands.

Much as the band relish playing together again, they’re not looking to work as permanently as before. “It was odd that doing something for Floyd could bring us back together, but within five minutes of starting rehearsals we knew that it felt right,” enthuses the now Californian-based frontman Ricky Warwick, who’s married for the second time and involved with Circus Diablo, a project featuring The Cult’s Billy Duffy. The Almighty’s ‘temporary’ comeback shows no sign of abating, though.

“Offers are coming in for shows, and it’s great that an official anthology like ‘Anth’F***ing’ology – The Gospel According To The Almighty’ is being released. Floyd’s feeling strong and things are proceeding naturally. Is the urge to write new songs still there? Definitely, it never goes away. And to tell you the truth, music is probably crying out again for a band like The Almighty,” adds Ricky.

So the door’s being left ajar, just to see what might happen? “Yeah. We’re not actively pursuing tours, record deals or whatever. But if we feel like writing some new stuff, who’s gonna stop us?”

ASIA Shepherd's Bush Empire, London Dec 3rd 2006

Now last time the original Asia line-up played the UK was back in 1983 and sadly I was too young to attend – honest  Now I am a fan of the John Payne fronted Asia (and have seen them live a fair few times) and the Wetton/Downes collaboration but nothing can quite match seeing all four original members back again, namely John Wetton (King Crimson/Uriah Heep), Geoff Downes (Buggles/Yes), Steve Howe (Yes) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Judging by the sold out Empire that view is shared by many (the John Payne fronted Asia never managed to filled this venue) and from all over the world with fans travelling from Japan, Sweden, Denmark and beyond.
The set list was based around the debut album, so you got such classics as ‘One Step Closer’, ‘Wildest Dreams’, ‘Only Time Will Tell’ and ‘Here Comes The Feeling’, the latter a real show stopper moment. Mixed in with these classics were unplugged versions of ‘Don’t Cry’ and ‘The Smile Has Left Your Eyes’ from the ‘Alpha’ album, which work well although you do hanker for the guitar riff on ‘Don’t’ Cry’. The four members each delve into their other bands so you get ‘In The Court Of The Crimson King’ by King Crimson, ‘Yes’s ‘Roundabout’ (which musically is fine but Wetton does not have the high range of Jon Anderson) and Steve Howe gets a solo acoustic spot, a stunning ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ and the Buggles hit ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’, complete with Geoff Downes in gold lame suit! The sheer musical talent on display is amazing and it is a personal treat to see one of my favourite drummers in action – boy does he know his way around a drum kit. Special mention to John Wetton, who has been beset by personal problems awhile back but tonight he is on fine vocal form and clearly loving every minute of it.
Encore time and you get ‘Ride Easy’ (originally only ever released as a b-side although you can get it on one of the many Asia compilations out on CD) and of course ‘Heat Of The Moment’, which gets the biggest audience reaction of the night. Nice touch in that 30 minutes after the show you can buy the CD of the concert.
The band are celebrating their 25th anniversary early as next year is the official date band the good news is that they will be back in the UK in 2007. Well worth going to see and it will be interesting to see if this pans out into merely a nostalgia trip or the band take it further and record new music together.

CREATIVE DESTRUCTION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY - THE WAY AHEAD

Background
Britain's music industry is is in crisis; sales of singles and albums are collapsing while digital downloads - often illegal - are exploding. Meanwhile UK artists are failing to exploit the new technologies and sales channels that could give them a competitive edge and the record companies continue to work on a pre-digital redundant business model - one where they have a monopoly of recording, releasing and distributing music.

The Economic Research Council, Britain’s oldest economic think-tank, has commissioned music technology expert Andrew Ian Dodge, and a published author, blogger and rock musician to explore how the UK could regain its past glory in the music industry. Jo-Anne Nadler, former Radio 1 producer and now an established political commentator and author has written the foreword. The paper describes the current crisis, how artists and the recording labels could adjust to the new digital era and what policy changes government should enact to make this possible.

Dodge, highly critical of the BBC's monopoly of the airwaves which has stymied musical innovation says;
"Still top-quality British music is ignored in favour of BBC-approved bland pap."
Furthermore, Dodge bemoans the music industry's failure to adjust to the new digital era.
"Choice for consumers to access music and for bands to promote and produce their wares continues at an impressive rate. The music business continues to stare at the oncoming future like a deer in headlamps."

Summary
British musicians are failing to break into the American market, the most lucrative of them all
This is because they are failing to exploit new technology and the recording labels do not understand the diversity of the American market
The BBC – unfairly – dominates the airwaves and decides what may and may not be played
And the BBC even contributes to the mass manufacture of boy-band/girl-band phenomena instead of allowing for musical diversity
American bands manage however to penetrate the UK market with ease
The music industry worldwide though is fighting a losing battle with the internet which regards it as a threat rather than a way to engage with their customers
Aspiring musicians can now use several services and technologies that bypass record companies and traditional retail outlets completely
They can also target new digital sales channels; ringtones, mobiles and taxis
The BBC’s monopoly of the airwaves must be ended for the public to enjoy a wider choice of music
Live music must be resurrected as a vital market research tool to find what customers like
Musicians must embrace the new distribution technology like CD Baby
Recording labels must specialize – not diversify
The cost of recording, releasing and distributing music has never been cheaper
Record companies no longer have a monopoly on sound technology or recording studios
Their model of over-spending on a few stars is over
The future of music is ever increasing choice and diversity

DARYL STUERMER ‘REWIRED - THE ELECTRIC COLLECTION’ Unicorn Records (2006) www.unicornrecords.com

Guitarist Daryl Stuermer may not be a well known to many but he is in the reformed Genesis touring band and has worked with the band and on their solo projects previously, plus of course carved his own solo niche. This collection shows of his guitar style, never too overstated and with a good ear for melody. The music ranges from jazz fusion through to some very prog rock moments and each song ha s tight melody with no OTT noodling that puts many off such instrumental albums. Picks are ‘Determined’ with its soaring guitar and keys, ‘Morning Train’ and ‘Road Warrior’.
Nicely timed for the Genesis reunion next year when Stuermer’s profile will be on the rise once more.
